How to Convert HEIC to JPG (iPhone Photos)

iLoveConvert Team · · 4 min read

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. The format is efficient – roughly half the size of a JPG at similar quality – but Windows, many websites and older apps cannot open it. Here are the easiest ways to get a JPG.

Option 1: Convert in your browser

The quickest way on any device is an online converter that works locally. HEIC to JPG decodes the photo inside your browser, so it is never uploaded – important for personal pictures.

  1. Open HEIC to JPG and add one or more HEIC photos.
  2. Choose the JPG quality (the default suits most uses).
  3. Convert and download – several files come as a ZIP.

Option 2: Make the iPhone save JPG

In Settings → Camera → Formats, choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Existing HEIC photos are not changed, and files take more space on your phone.

Option 3: Let the iPhone convert when sharing

When you send photos by mail or AirDrop them to a non-Apple device, iOS often converts them to JPG automatically. Under Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC,Automatic does the same when copying over a cable.

Does converting lose quality?

A small amount, because JPG is lossy, but at a quality of 85–92 the difference is not visible in normal use. The JPG will be larger than the HEIC file – that is expected.

What about privacy?

iPhone photos usually contain the exact location where they were taken.iLoveConvert removes this metadata during conversion. To check what a photo reveals first, use the EXIF Viewer.
